How to Choose the Right Liquid Filling Machine for Your Product

  • Different valves can be used on the machine to accommodate varying textures

  • Easy integration into production lines
  • Handles lotions, body butters and thick gels, without creating air pockets.
  • Bottom-up filling machines are used for foamy products

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for carbonated products

Overflow Filling Machines

Overflow fillers are ideal for free-flowing liquids such as water, beverages and certain cleaning products. Overflow fillers fill each container to a fixed visual level rather than a fixed volume. Excess liquid is then directed back into the supply tank.

Overflow fillers are best for thin, foamy or clear liquids such as shampoos, soaps and household cleaners. Piston fillers are a better option for thick products than overflow filling machines

Key characteristics:

  • Produces a consistent “fill to line” look
  • Excellent for transparent containers
  • Handles minor bottle volume variations
  • Recirculates excess product back to the tank

Limitations:

  • Not truly volumetric (can waste product)
  • Not suitable for particulate-heavy or thick liquids

Flow Meter Fillers

Flow meter filling machines deliver a pre-programmed, precise volume of fluid using mass flow or magnetic meters. These machines are best for free-flowing liquids with high accuracy.

Key characteristics:

  • Very high accuracy and repeatability
  • No mechanical displacement required
  • Minimal product waste
  • Accommodates a wide range of container types

Limitations:

  • Higher upfront cost
  • Less suitable for highly viscous or particulate-heavy products (depending on the meter type)
  • Requires stable product characteristics for best performance

Gravity Fillers

Product flows from an elevated tank into containers by gravity. The timed valve openings help to determine the fill volumes. These machines are easy to maintain as there are no machine components like seals or moving parts. Key characteristics:
  • Relies on gravity
  • Works best with free-flowing liquids
Limitations:
  • Can not reliably dispense foamy or viscous products.

Auger Fillers

Auger fillers are used for dry, non-flowing fine powders, spices, and flour that would jam in other fillers. The screw speed, or auger, can be adjusted to ensure accurate fill weights

2. Calculate Your Required Throughput

Confirm the target daily volume operating hours per shift and the number of shifts. This will help confirm how many bottles per hour are required. Make sure you allow for product changeovers, cleaning and restarts. The minimum number of nozzles can then be calculated.

3. Container Considerations

The container being filled plays a significant role in the selection of your filling machine. Bottle shape, opening size, fill volume, and material can all influence the filling process. Glass, plastic and aluminium containers each present unique handling requirements.
